The arithmetic, and the dates
Two things go wrong with vials, and neither is dramatic. The first is unit conversion: a syringe marked 0–100 units is measuring volume, not milligrams, so the same dose is a different number of units at a different concentration — which is why the number changes when you change supplier. The second is time: a reconstituted vial has a beyond-use date that is usually much shorter than the expiry printed on the box. Lumara tracks both. It does not choose your dose, and it does not vouch for where your prescription came from.
Worth knowing about compounded GLP-1s
- Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved: the FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality before they reach you.
- Concentration varies between compounders, so units for the same dose can change when you change supplier.
- The FDA has published specific concerns about unapproved GLP-1 products, including dosing errors and contamination in multi-dose vials.
- Salt forms (for example "semaglutide sodium") are not the same as the approved active ingredient.

It is a volume conversion: your dose in milligrams divided by the vial's concentration in milligrams per millilitre gives millilitres, and on a standard 100-unit insulin syringe one millilitre is 100 units. Lumara does it from your vial strength and diluent volume and shows every step, so you can check it against the label rather than trusting a black box.
Your compounder sets the beyond-use date, and it is usually much shorter than the expiry on an unopened product. Enter it once and Lumara counts down, warns you before it lapses, and tells you how many doses are left so you can reorder in time.
